What the NHL Playoffs Can Teach You About Business

What the NHL Playoffs Can Teach You About Business http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

The NHL playoffs are just getting underway, and the excitement is mounting in both players and fans alike. For some business owners, this may be the only distraction they will allow. I, for one, have been tuning into each home team game, feeling more and more pressed for business time – I wonder why! While watching last night’s game, it struck me how similar the playoff mentality is to how we should be conducting our businesses, and what we can learn as business owners from our hockey addiction!

When the players hit the ice, they have a game plan that is the result of an entire season’s worth of planning, hard work, wins, losses, injuries, good and bad plays, penalties, teamwork, goal setting, and evaluation to name a few. Teams don’t make it to the playoffs without going through this process and without working hard to achieve success. Similarly, in business, we start out with a business plan, and before we reach a successful level, we have to work hard at setting and achieving our goals; We may win some, we may lose some; We make mistakes, pick ourselves up again, evaluate our progress, and alter the plan until we come up in profit.

The playoffs are a time of incredible focus, and you can see this in the players’ eyes on the bench and on the ice. They are focused on one thing, despite distractions from the cheering crowd, and despite what else is going on in their lives. No matter what, they are focused on their personal and team achievement, and that sweet taste of champaign from the Stanley Cup that could soon be theirs. But this doesn’t come without focus, hard work, persistence, determination, consistency, and courage. When you see the oxygen tanks coming out for the triple OTs, you know they are going above and beyond. In our businesses, we may get a lucky bounce at times too, but we are not truly rewarded unless we maintain the same focus on our goals and dreams, and the same consistency which creates positive results for us. This also means having the physical health, strength, capacity, and endurance of a top-notch athlete.

This cannot always be accomplished on our own. NHL players have their own unique skills and abilities and achieve their own personal stats. But to make it to the Stanley Cup final, they need to do it as a team. Teamwork means working together in both practices and games to evaluate the competitors, generate strategies and plays, executing them at the appropriate times, and evaluating their progress. All of this takes place under the direction of coaches. Communication and flexibility in both coaches and players to change the game plan when necessary are critical. Only the best lines will hit the ice in critical moments of the game. Business owners can go it alone, but the best results are achieved through this same kind of teamwork – through networking and joint ventures, and talking to your prospects and customers. Those who choose a mentor or business coach whose goals and achievements are higher than one’s own and who will keep them motivated will draw success to them; Those who know when something isn’t working in their business plans and who have the flexibility to make changes will find success; Those who communicate well with their team will help themselves and those on their team get through difficult times and get ahead of the rest.

Finally, players and fans in the NHL playoffs have an unbridled amount of enthusiasm, and a positive attitude and spirit, without which they would never reach their full potential as individuals and team players, and never get to raise Lord Stanley’s Cup above their heads in front of thousands of screaming fans in the finals. They have a dream in mind that carries them to victory. In our businesses, we are also more victorious when we have a support network, full of positive, enthusiastic, and energized team players who know that nothing will stop us from reaching our moments of glory. These moments will come, as we watch our playoff heroes on the ice, follow their examples, and try to do as they do in our businesses to reach our prize at the end!

Miami’s Florida Panthers

Miami’s Florida Panthers http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Miami is home to the Florida Panthers, a professional ice hockey team. They are part of the Southeast Division of the Eastern Conference of the National Hockey League (NHL). Their home rink is at Bank Atlantic Center.

On the 10th of December 1992, the Florida Panthers team was born by an expansion draft. H. Wayne Huizenga, the infamous Blockbuster Video magnate, owned the team after having lobbied for a Miami based ice hockey team for several years. The name of the team was chosen as homage to the Florida Panther, a species endemic to southern Florida. The team’s colors are gold, red, black and blue.

The Panthers began their history positively, having the most successful first season of any expansion team. Despite the success, they missed out on the final playoff spot by just one point. The team and coaching staff all gave credit for their excellent first season to the trap-defence technique of play. In a game as rough and tumble as ice hockey, this conservative style was criticized by the rest of the league with some even saying it was ruining the flow of the game.

On the night of the home opening game of the Florida Panthers third season, the team was in their locker room during an intermission. A rat scampered across the floor and Scott Mellanby took the opportunity to ‘one-time’ it against the wall, killing the rat. Later that night, he scored two goals which his teammate, John Vanbiesbrouck teased him as being a ‘rat trick’. The story got out to the public and two nights later, fans began throwing rubber rats on the ice whenever a Florida goal was scored. During the regular season, the rubber rats numbered in the teens, however during the playoffs, the numbers shot up to 2000.

The 1995/1996 NHL season is, to date, the most successful season the Panthers have had in their history. They reached the 1996 playoff season as the fourth seed and went on the win the first round against Boston in five games. Their second round against the Philadelphia Flyers was successful, as was the third round against the second seed team, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Stanley Cup Final series was a big accomplishment for such a new team. Their opponents were the hefty Colorado Avalanche, who swept them in four games.

Their next season began very well, with a 17 game unchallenged streak. But during the second half of the season, the team choked. Their streak racked up enough points to get them into the playoffs, but they lost the first round in only five games. Unfortunately, the Panthers have not been able to repeat their early success, despite high profile trades involving many hockey superstars. Pavel Bure was brought to Florida to play with his brother, Valeri. It did not seem to make a difference.

A number of bad trade decisions were to follow the managing staff of the Florida Panthers. In 2002, their decision to send Jay Bouwmeester to Columbus led the head coach at the time (Mike Keenan) to express his regret at the decision. In 2006, the Panthers traded Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and Sergei Shirokov to the Vancouver Canucks, in exchange for Todd Bertuzzi, Alex Auld and Bryan Allen. Some critics in the hockey world have called this the worst trade in professional sports history. Bertuzzi was trying to recover from highly publicized on-ice incident, Alex Auld left the team a year later and Bryan Allen, having peaked that season, was riddled with knee problems. The Panthers ended up giving away the leagues best goaltender (Luongo) who would end up assisting the Canadian Olympic team win gold at the 2010 Winter Olympics.

The Florida Panthers have seen their share of bad seasons and bad trades. After missing the playoffs in the 2009/2010 season, they are the first team in NHL history to miss the playoffs nine times in a row while still based in the same city. If they miss the 2010/2011 season, they will hold the record for most consecutive instances of not qualifying for the playoffs.

San Jose Sharks Off-Season Report

San Jose Sharks Off-Season Report http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Alrighty, here we go. So we’ve haven’t heard about any major moves from the Sharks and GM Wilson in free agency or trades this off season, except for the signings of Ortmeyer and Nichol, as well as some resignings. But recently there’s the “Heatley” rumor going around that the Sharks might have a go at him.

This would be a huge move for San Jose if they could pull it off, though I’m sure it’d cost the team a few players and prospects. After all the Oilers offered three quality players for Heatley and were denied, so this should serve as a benchmark.

Such players might included Michalek, Vlasic, and maybe even Cheechoo. The former two have time on their side and probably haven’t hit their peaks yet. It’d be a shame to lose them, as they’re both solid players.

Vlasic’s offensive skills have always been evident, but his defense has definitely improved of late. The Sharks should try holding onto him, in addition to Michalek. Ideally, a trade of Cheechoo, Murray, and another role player or future draft pick would be best for the San Jose franchise.

Cheechoo, because he doesn’t seem to have it anymore after that 50 goal campaign in 05-06. Plus, he’s been somewhat injury prone ever since but when he’s healthy, he still doesn’t produce these numbers anymore. Murray, on the other hand, they can trade, because the Sharks already have a Murray-type player in Mike Moore.

The Sharks should probably look to move Marleau as the third piece of a potential deal. His stock rose last year after an improved season, but many still doubt his ability to be a beneficial team captain.

Marleau should lose the captain role either way. Thornton and Boyle are both more qualified in the leadership category in my opinion, and one of them should replace him.

All we can do now is wait on what Wilson does and hope that his moves will take us to the Stanley Cup.

Brian Kent loves the NHL as much as anything else in live. A Sharks fan, he can always be seen talking hockey at a top San Jose Sharks forum , and won a sports trivia tournament just last month.

Styling Your Hockey Techniques After Those Used By N H L Players

Styling Your Hockey Techniques After Those Used By N H L Players http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Many coaches are very intent on helping players style their level of hockey play to reach the level required to pursue a career in the National Hockey League. Some coaches are new to teaching hockey but may have been hockey players in the past. With the experiences and exposures to hockey that they have had, they try in earnest to teach players well enough so that they can pursue an NHL career too.

In the high schools that are lucky enough to have access to a hockey rink, the teachers might be a bit lax on all of the moves that are required to learn hockey on a professional level. High schools settle for teaching the bare basics at times just to be able to offer an extra-curricular activity for kids to get them active and interested in something other than video games.

They might require students to attend several NHL games throughout the course of a school year just to earn extra credit. Of course, there is an underlying factor behind these teaching incentives and one of them is to give all the opportunity to see how enjoyable a career as an NHL player might be. With the right training and a certain degree of talent, a student from a rural area might become a Stanley Cup finalist a few years down the road.

Other coaches are certainly motivated to do the best job they can in teaching young people to learn hockey and learn it well. They invest their time and money on interactive programs that take hockey players step by step through the entire process of learning all of the techniques involved to play well enough to pursue a career in the NHL. While the cost is not that much, the rewards from the effort will stick with that coach for the rest of their lives.

Anything that is technologically advanced is certain to catch the eye or the attention of any young person. If a young person has already expressed interest in learning how to play hockey, the task of teaching them is almost complete before they get their first lesson. Kids can take great pride in preparing themselves for getting on the ice by going online and doing some shopping to buy spare gear that NHL players wear.

While the presentations teach youngsters how to play hockey and progressively develop their skills to a level that is deemed sufficient to apply for a position on any hockey team above the school level, the inspiration that NHL gear has on a hockey enthusiast will let them truly imagine how they would look at a professional NHL game.

They might choose to create their own logo for their hockey shirt, but there are many sold by the NHL that feature a specific team. All of the uniform gear a kid can put their hands on is certain to have years of wear before they progress to the point where their skills match those required by the NHL.
