The rise of black moon might sound like the title of the apocalyptic science fiction film, yet the astronomical event is to signal the end of the world, in spite of the concerns of several doomsayers.

From the blood moons to the strawberry ones and those of super variety, it’s hard to keep up with other names given to the natural satellite of the Earth. This latest lunar event causes excitement among the skygazers and many people are wondering what it’s actually.

On the 30th of September, Western Hemisphere’s sky watchers might be tempted to add a lunar event to their list, which is known as the second new moon in one month. But, it isn’t exactly going to be visible.

New moons happen when the orbit of the moon takes it between the sun and Earth, leaving the unilluminated side of the orb facing Earth. At night, this moon’s phase is very impossible to see since the new moons are in the same sky as the sun, they set and rise with the sun and overwhelmed by the sun’s glare.

New moods can be seen only once they pass directly in front of the sun, which cause solar eclipses. Otherwise, the sky watchers should look to the days after or before a new moon when just a silver of the sunlit side of the moon is visible from the planet Earth. Typically, new moons happen only once a month, yet due to the reason that there is a slight disjunct between the phases of the moon and Gregorian calendar, there are months that could have 2 new moons: one at the end and one at the beginning.

In this sense, the black moon is like the blue moon’s evil twin, conventionally understood as the month’s second full moon. However, this new moon like astronomical event does not bring ill tidings, in spite the astrological fear-mongering that has been seeping online. It must not be confused with the blue moon, which is a phenomenon that happens when there’s a second full moon in a calendar month. The black moon is the blue moon’s flip side.

The previous black moon happened in March 2014 and after the black moon on the 30th of September, it is expected to happen in 2019.

In Eastern Hemisphere, the new moon begins after midnight on the 1st of October, putting it in a wrong month to fit the famous definition. For instance, in London, the moon reaches its phase at 1:11 am, which means the United Kingdom will not experience the black moon at all even in the coming days, more like an apocalypse.

But, according to experts, Eastern Hemisphere will rather get a black moon on 30th of October and for those who are living in Japan, East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand, black moon come on Halloween.
