Cuba On High Alert For Hurricane Mathew

Batten down the hatches Cuba, Hurricane Mathew Is coming fast.

Havana Times  has reported that the Civil Defense Department in Cuba has issued a massive hurricane warning for the provinces of Camaguey to Guantanamo. It is currently estimated that the center of the cyclone Matthew is a little more than two days away to enter the island. The storm is a powerful Category 4 with maximum sustained winds of 240 mph with even higher gusts.

At 6:00 pm. Cuba time (EDT), the center of Matthew was located 740 kms south – southeast of Santiago de Cuba and 770 miles south southeast of the city of Guantanamo. Currently is slowly moving northwest at 6 mph reported the Meteorological Center of Cuba (INSMET).

During the next 12 hours Matthew is forecast to continue in the same path with some fluctuations in intensity, always remaining a powerful hurricane, INSMET said.

While the danger is greater for the eastern provinces, which are at the center of Cuba and as such they have also been alerted to monitor the evolution of the cyclone.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami said that Matthew can produce large amounts of rain, estimated at 15 to 25 inches (38-63 centimeters) or more over southern Haiti and 10 to 20 inches (15 to 30 centimeters ) on the east of Jamaica, the Dominican Republic and eastern Cuba. “These rains will likely produce flash floods and mudslides that are life-threatening.”

Storm surge is expected to be 2 to 3.5 meters on the south coast of Cuba, east of Cabo Cruz, and just over 1 meter to nearly two meters on the north east coast of Camagüey, the NHC warned.
