According to the Attorney General, Loretta Lynch, the Department of Justice shall be collecting complete and more standard data from the past when it comes to police use of deadly force when subject to duty. This announcement elevates the position of FBI Director, James Comey’s statement.

He told the panel that the bureau was ongoing to setup a database to track police killings, use of force during tour of duty in public etc. The Justice Department now also plans to have a pilot program for data collection that will be implemented at the start of next year.

This will be precise and comprehensive when it comes to use of force by law enforcers. It will bring about informed and productive discussion about community police relations as well. This system will also bring about transparency and increase trust between communities and law enforcement agencies they claim.

Methodologies will be studied and collected; public comment will also be made part of it. This means that all local, state and even federal law enforcement area, civil right organizations, and even other community reserves will be included.

Such a data base study was a long time coming

This is due to the fact that high profile cases in which unarmed people died through police detainment. According to reports, 754 people have been killed this way.

According to the FBI, this pilot study will include large enforcing organizations like the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, Drug Enforcement Administration, and even the US Marshals Office and yes,  the FBI itself.

Legislative action has been called for pushing to collect this data. The collection of non-lethal force isn’t needed but according to the Department of Justice, it will work for getting that data too.
