WHO Introduced Sugar Tax!

 “WHO” Introduces The Sugar Tax!

Recently, the World Health Organization has shown its hand to support nations that have special sugar tax on soft drinks. A recent study on the prices of soft drinks revealed that the cost has increased by nearly 20%. This increase in price has encouraged manufacturers to improve the drink’s nutritional value. Meanwhile, sugar tax has increased the overall price of soft drinks. Thus, a lot of customers are avoiding the consumption of the drinks. Few years back, WHO advised manufacturers to reduce the amount of sugar contained in these beverages.. However, there was very little response to this request. As a result, WHO decided to take off  the tax benefits..

The Figures

Countries like Hungary and Mexico have started to add sugar tax on their products. In fact, South Africa is planning to introduce sugar tax in 2017. This is the only African country to implement the sugar tax. WHO wishes to reduce the total amount of free sugars that get consumed.. By definition, free sugars are ingredients found in various dietary products. These sugars are not found in natural milk or fruit. Here is an account of the amount of free sugars in various food products:

  • 330 ml of Cola has 36g of sugar.
  • 125g of Fruit Yogurt has 11.25g of sugar
  • 150 ml of orange juice has 12.9g of sugar

The Future

Dr. Francesco Branca of WHO believes that healthy people don’t require sugar in their daily dietary routines. The intake of sugar should be less than 10% of the person’s caloric requirements. To be in the safer side, the amount of sugar in your diet should be less than 5%! Likewise, the company WHO is looking for ways to subsidy vegetables and fruit. This way, people would start to lead a healthy and a livelier life.
